October: Grace Boyle

Grace Boyle of Small Hands, Big Ideas (above) rocked yoga last month. I selfishly wanted to feature her for inspiration because I hate the gym. And it hates me. Okay, really I love it, but who has time to exercise? No, seriously. I’m constantly exhausted, often to the point where I worry myself into thinking something is seriously wrong, when in reality? I need movement. The kind that doesn’t require my wrist being glued to my mouse.

Here’s what I did cross off for September:

September Goals

1. Start to exercise once a week.
2. Get 30% more blog and PR coverage for Alice than I did in August.
3. Update and automate budget to appropriately allocate money toward credit card debt and savings accounts.
4. Start writing weekly on Modite again.

My favorite accomplishment was creating a spending plan, a savings plan and a debt-reduction plan. Oh, spreadsheets, how I adore thee. It was also nice to start writing weekly on Modite again, a habit that’s a bit like settling into the arms of your boyfriend. With Alice, even though I met my goal, I didn’t feel like I stepped things up the way I intended so I’m taking a more holistic approach for October. Here’s what I’m looking forward to:

October Goals

1. Run! Yoga! Elliptical! Twice a week = happy life.
2. Stick to completely realistic budget.
3. Develop and implement 3-month Alice PR plan.
4. Write twice weekly on Modite.
5. Throw an appetizer and wine party.

I’m stepping everything up a notch for October and adding the dinner party for some fun. Plus, I love my condo, and I think it’s perfect for entertaining. The list is ambitious, but I’m hoping each item will help spur the others along.

Your turn! What did you cross off for September? What’s got you excited for October?

_____________________________________________________________________

To participate in the meet-up:

1. Post a list of your career/life related goals for Oct, along with your checked off Sept goals if you’d like, on your own blog.
2. Come back here and leave a link to your post in the comments (*If you don’t have your own blog, feel free to share your list here in the comments to join in!)
3. Then, check out everyone else’s lists as they leave comments - click their links, visit their blogs, say hello, meet, greet and support each other because that’s what it’s all about!

Whoo! Good luck this month. I have a special mid-month reminder to look forward to, and the next meet-up will be Friday,  October 30th so that we can set goals for November. I’m marking my calendar for it now, and look forward to seeing your October goals in the meantime!

Okay, here we go, it’s October, time for another Goal Meetup, and the crossing off part for September is making me nervous. Lol. Will definitely post my October goals before the week ends.

Congrats on crossing off most of your goals, Rebecca! Really happy that you’re posting quite often here at Modite, definitely something to look forward to each week. And I’m excited about that appetizer and wine party. Perfect for the Halloween, I think, could be a unique way to celebrate it. Have fun!

What I really love about this, is that I have to think of goals and focus. Not just the big lofty ones, but even the little ones. Here’s my check in, and looking forward to progress through the next month.

Oof.I should have added a 5th goal that said “complete all of this months goals”. Not so great last month, but 3 out of 4 isn’t TOO bad, right????

I love your goal this month to host a shindig. I’d like to do something similar in the future. :)

I’m going to do two separate posts (one for closing out September goals, and one tomorrow on October goals). The September goals results are up! http://www.jessicadietz.com/blog/2009/09/30/september-goals-the-results/

This has been a great experience so far! Thank you Rebecca for putting so much time into it! :)

Just published the Sept. in review post. Will post Oct goals tomorrow!

Even though you didn’t meet all your goals, I think you did a pretty good job. I mean, they are your GOALS for a reason. You have to reach for them a little bit.

@ Karla – I didn’t even think of making the party Fall-themed, love that idea, thanks! Looking forward to your post.

@ Emily – Yeah, I always take a look at my big, lofty goals and break them down for the monthly meet-up – I actually feel like I’m getting somewhere! Thanks for participating : )

@ Desiree – 3 out of 4 is great! Ha, same as me : ). Looking forward to reading over your goals.

@ Jessica – Thanks for posting! I like that you’re splitting up the posts giving each month it’s own spotlight : )

@ Monica – Well, thanks! Appreciate the encouragement and looking forward to seeing your October goals!

Yes! An autumn-themed wine and appetizer party is very sweet. So many fruity cocktails to choose from, and wonderful nuts and other fall nibbles to go with it. The colors are very pretty, too. :)

Congratulations to all who achieved most or all of their goals!

I love the idea of a wine an appetizer party. We had an annual “Wine and Cheese” party in college, so maybe I should start the tradition again.

    My goals for September were:
    1) Research Marketing MBA Options—is it right for me?
I have MBA options down to 3 schools. UW-Madison, U of MN, and St. Thomas (Minneapolis). They all have very different programs, so I have decided that I need more time to determine what I really like and don’t like. As of now, I have no plans to start test prep. What I will be doing is putting more effort into determining what areas of my current job really interest me and I want to pursue further.
    2) Increase my volunteer hours by 20% for the MN AMA.
I have greatly increased my participation as the MN AMA’s LinkedIn Project Manager. This has been due to a lot more events being planned and the MN AMA community getting more active on LinkedIn. I look forward to continuing this participation.
    3) Begin working out twice a week.
Yes! I did it. I HATED the gym, but I stuck to it and it has become part of my routine. I wouldn’t say I enjoy working out yet, but it is not as painful as it once was : )
    4) Stick to my budget.—I struggled with this one. Mainly because I went on a fall shopping spree with some birthday money. Some of it should have gone into savings.

    My October Goals are:
    1) Start putting 10% of each paycheck into savings
    2) Find a new partner for kickboxing and sign up
    3) Take 3 days off to visit w/ friends back from Seattle and Dubai
    4) Update my resume
    5) Get the ball rolling on starting my own blog, so I don’t have to keep taking up so much room on Rebecca’s comments : )

I wish everyone luck and look forward to our mid-month meet-up!

I can’t stress enough that the public goal setting has made such a difference to me. Thanks for including me, Rebecca. Just this morning I got up at 6:00 AM for a morning yoga session, heated too. I feel so good and I’m not quite sure how I’m managing it!

Here is my October Monthly Meetup post:

Happily, I completed all my goals for September and a few are still in progress. We’ll see if I can manage!

    Rebecca,
Congrats on all of those goal markoffs for September…wishing you much success in October. As my Mom frequently says, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” My October goals are posted and I am happy to say that a few of the September goals were crossed off.

Here is my October Monthly Meetup post http://zestolife.blogspot.com/

Take a peek and hopefully they can be an inspiration to someone out there struggling with setting and accomplishing goals. Rebecca, you are the best! I can’t thank you and your followers enough for all of the encouraging words. Here’s to a great October! Cj

Oopsie! I posted my goals in the wrong spot! Here’s this month’s post: http://www.freelancedom.com/2009/09/30/october-monthly-goal-meet-up/

There are some things I worry I won’t be able to accomplish, but I have my fingers crossed. :)

  • http://modite.com/blog Rebecca Thorman

@ Amanda – Awesome! And yes, you should totally start a blog – that’d be fun! For your 10% savings goal, I’d recommend that you have it automatically deducted from your checking account each month so you can’t even touch it. That makes it a lot easier. Also, would love to hear more on kickboxing and how you successfully completed working out twice a week! I need to do that this month… eek!

  • http://www.allisonurban.com Allison

I really love this idea! Public accountability! I’ve really enjoyed looking through everyone’s goals…especially for trends.

    Here are my October goals:

Hi there! I’m getting there with my goals, I had to have some repeats for next month. Hopefully, I’ll be better this time around. I am really impressed with my progress, even if I didn’t run or post on my blog as much as I’d like.

    Thank you!

Thanks Rebecca for setting up such a meetup for monthly goal setting. I just got to know this when I started to visit your blog recently. This is a really good idea!

I used to set my yearly goals which almost seem so far to achieve from where I am. Though I knew that I have to take one step at a time, this monthly goal setting post seems to be much more easier and realistic to achieve!

I loved this idea for personal and public accountability when I first heard it but didn’t get the chance to participate last month. Although, really, maybe my goal last month was to do so this month? Which: success!

It seems to me that most of the bloggers posting for the monthly goal meet up are female…

After going through one round of blog commenting to all the bloggers talking about their goals, I do realize that most of the goals have to do with gym… And they are all ladies so far… Am I the only guy here?

    My goals for this month:

    1) Set up http://rosie-clarke.net and write at least 5 posts on it

    2) Write 4 important letters

    3) Help 2 housemates to move, find 1 new housemate, and have a clean and organised house by the beginning of November

    4) A personal finance goal I’ve been putting off.

Best of luck to everyone else – sending positive vibes and good wishes your way from autumnal Brighton!

Yes, yes, yes, my October goals are a little easier than September, but I’m getting married this month! Nov will see me ramp up in terms of health, fitness and finances. This month, i want to kick back and smell the roses too!

Good luck to everyone else with theirs!

This is my first attempt at the goal meet-up. I’m very excited! I love the idea of public accountability. Finding others who have the same or similar goals to help support and lift one another up is just priceless!
