New look for a new month

posted by Rebecca Thorman  ////  March 2

Note: This post was originally published on my first blog, Modite, and is now archived here.

I wasn’t planning on redesigning my blog. I was planning on spending the evening with friends. But I sat down to make some minor changes and before I knew it, 2:00 am rolled around and my blog was completely different.

Key new features include a new look and feel, drawing inspiration from some of my favorite bloggers. You can also search the blog using the Google widget in the sidebar, and whenever I post something to del.icio.us you’ll know under the “daily links i like” sidebar section. You can also see where I contribute under the sidebar section “community,” and I’ve placed the old mastheads under the “about” section if you’re feeling nostalgic.

I really hope you all enjoy the new look, and I welcome your feedback. I’ll be fine-tuning some things as time goes on, but if you see any glaring problems, do let me know. Thank you!

I personally like the elephant. Oddly enough, I recently made a new friend who collects elephants, as they hold a personal significance for her and was shocked to find I was similarly inclined.

My father and I retro-fitted an old trunk with thick foam and elephant print upholstery years ago, and it remains a prized possesion, though fraying at the edges. You can imagine the knee-slapping fun I have referring to it as my “elephant trunk.”

    Any significance for you?

@ Milena – Your story made me laugh – thanks! I think elephants are good luck, and I like what I’ve read about them. Not that I sit around reading about elephants, but you know. Also, and this is where it gets really dorky, when I was little I used to love Secret Garden, and the character has an elephant just like this one in the movie.

I probably won’t keep the elephant, but thought it would be a good (auspicious) initiation for the new look.

    I like it. A lot.

Great look! Very clean, yet still personable.

    Nice work!

    @ Norcross – thanks! I like you. A lot. :)

@ Travis – I appreciate the kind comment. I especially didn’t want it to feel cold, but still maintain a modern feel.

5 out of 10. Also, when you say you like “lip singing” I think you mean “lip-synching?”

    Remember– “Hug thy naysayer!”

@ Johannes – Since I know from you that 5 out of 10 means 11 out of 10, thank you. And I thought lip-singing and lip-synching were the same thing, no? I’ll change it..

looks pretty good. Sort of like the child of Modite and Dooce.

  • http://modite.com/blog Rebecca Thorman

@ Brad – I was wondering who would mention the similarities! Would obsession be too strong of a word to describe how much I like Dooce? I’m a big fan, and am happy to hear others think the new design bears Dooce-like genes… :)

The new typeface is my favorite part. The del.icious links is a great idea as well. I don’t think people could handle the randomness that is my del.icious.

Love the typeface too! The design is a little reminiscent of the Water for Elephants book, No?

@ Elysa – Thank you! That means a lot coming from you, a graphic designer extraordinaire. My delicious links are so random too, but I wanted to let people I was reading them even if I don’t always comment…

@ Danielle – Yeah, water for elephants, I thought that too. I’ve got elephants on my mind! Hopefully there’s no stampede ;) Thanks for the comment.
