The Modite 2009 Holiday Gift Guide

I was at brunch with Ryan this morning and I was asking him about the upcoming holidays and the gifts I had planned for different people. And I asked him if he knew what he was getting different people.

“No, it’s too early to be thinking about gifts,” he replied.

“Really? You think so? People start shopping the day after Thanksgiving though.”

“Yeah, way too early.”

“So when do you buy gifts? The day before Christmas?”

“Exactly. That’s the best time.”

Which, okay, really doesn’t surprise me because my mom used to tell me my father did the same thing. But just in case you want to give it a little more thought, I’ve put together a gift guide chock-full of great gifts, most under $100 , a ton under $50, and a few luxuries thrown in here and there.

I’ll do one or two posts a day throughout the week, starting tomorrow. Hope you guys love it!

While I used to have the same attitude towards gift giving as Ryan, my wife has since shown me the value of being more prepared when it comes to gift giving (and card giving). My wife even randomly buys gifts (and cards) that are good deals all throughout the year that fit general gift categories that we keep stored away on a gift shelf in case we forget about an event that has gifts involved. I figure her keen and thrifty sense of shopping has saved us tons in last minute shopping. As it relates to my gift shopping I figure I no longer have any excuse when it comes to procrastination with the ease of online shopping.

I’ve given up on giving gifts for “the holidays”. Too many people celebrate them differently; too many people shopping at the same time! My husband and I have shifted our gift giving to folks’ birthdays. That way, we shower our attention and our gifts on the person on their special day. When we gather as family over “the holidays”, we’re just there for the family hang. Feels a little awkward when everyone is exchanging gifts, but we just sit back and enjoy, knowing that we’ve recognized everyone on their special day.
